Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (1869-1948), commonly known around the world as Mahatma Gandhi, delivered the speech “Non-violence is the first article of my faith” on March 23, 1922, as a statement to the court after he was arrested by the British government. Gandhi played a major role in India´s struggle for independence which he tried to achieve by promoting nonviolent noncooperation with the British system and laws.
