Earnest Hemingway (1899-1961) was one of the most important American writers.
Besides being an author, he also was a reporter and a war correspondent. In 1918 he volunteered for the American Field Service.
He was stationed at the North Italian border and the border between Germany and France, where he was seriously wounded.
The short story Old Man at the Bridge takes place during the Spanish Civil War in the late 1930s. It reflects Hemingway’s own experience in war. The story was published in the volume The Fifth Column and the Firth Forty-Nine Stories in 1938.
