Kurzbeschreibung zu "Spotlight, Januar 2012: Scotland - Come and discover great traditions"

Dear reader, I’d like to begin by wishing you a happy andhealthy New Year. I also have a second wish, and it’s one that you can easily make cometrue. On page 36 of this issue, you’ll find ourreaders’ survey. I very much hope that you willtake the time to fill it out. This is an effective way for you to give us feedback on Spotlight, and we are excited to hear your opinions. One lucky participant will also win atrip to London, and there are many other great prizes. Which part is English and which is German? As someone who isbilingual (German / English), I often ask myself this question. Why do I talkabout my household in German, but get angry in English? Bilingualism is aboutmore than simply being able to speak two languages. In fact, it is a phenomenon about which linguists are still divided. In our language feature this month (pp.14-21), Vivienne Arnold and Jo Westcombe look at the latest findings onthe topic and ask bilinguals about their experiences.

A very special and personalized tradition is what author Eve Lucas set out to discover when she visited Scotland recently. She travelled tothe lovely Highlands, to the gentle Border country and to the beautiful city of Edinburgh – to find what? You’ll need to take the trip with her to answer thatquestion. The journey begins on page 30.
