Eine Skizzierung der Bedeutung des Begriffes “Pygmalion” sowie eine knappe Zusammenfassung des Romaninhalts stellen eine kurze Einführung in die Thematik dar. Charakterisierungen der drei Hauptcharaktere Henry Higgins, Oberst Pickering und Eliza Doollittle und ihr Verhältnis zueinander bilden einen wichtigen Teil des Textes. Abschließend wird eine Analyse der Sprache und ihrer Entwicklung bei Eliza Doolittle vorgestellt. Diese Sprachanalyse geschieht auf der Grundlage des englischen Textes, ansonsten werden beide Formen berücksichtigt.

Anne Chislett (*1942) is a Canadian author and screenwriter. After graduating from the University of British Columbia, she worked as a teacher until 1980. Since then, Chislett has been a full-time author.
Her best-known works are The Tomorrow Box (1980) and Quiet in the Land (1996). The play Flippin’ In, which was first produced in 1996, won the Chalmer’s Canadian Play for Young Audiences Award.

Russell, Willy - Educating Rita

William Martin Russell (*1947), commonly known as “Willy” Russell, is an English playwright, author and screenwriter. Russell comes from a working class background and grew up in Liverpool, where he finished school at the age of 15 with one O-Level in English. Until the age of 20 he worked as a ladies´ hairdresser, but then decided to study drama at a teachers´ training college.
Russell has published numerous plays, musicals and film scripts. Educating Rita was first published as a play in 1980 and made into a movie in 1983. Russell has been presented with a number of awards for this play, among them a nomination for the Oscar in 1984 as “Best Adapted Screenplay”.

Sam Shepard (*1943) is an American playwright and actor. After briefly studying agriculture he came into contact with the theatre and began writing plays. Besides being a writer, Shepard has also directed some screen plays.
The drama True West debuted in 1980 in San Francisco. It was first published in print in 1981. In 1984 the play was made into a movie.
